NATIONAL COLTS CUP
1st Round
vs Old Albanians
28th SEPTEMBER 2009
Coopers Colts entertained Westcliff Colts in this excellent quarter final of the Essex Colts Cup at the School on Sunday Nov 25th.
With Coopers missing a number of players who were unable to get back from university the Westcliff heavier pack dominated the early scrums, however on nine minutes the ball broke Coopers way and inside centre Luke Thomas picked up and surged over the line for the first try that captain and fly half Scott Sarson converted. Westcliff continued to drive down field and were rewarded when a five yard scrum was won by Coopers but the resulting kick was charged down and they dived over for a try. Coopers responded and maintained good control through nine phases of play before winger Myles Brady touched down for his try that Sarson converted. Six minutes later a line out on Coopers five yard line was won by Westcliff who powered over for a try and with last play of the first half a strong run by Westcliff centre saw them take the lead with a try under the posts that was converted.
Score at hal time Old Cooperian Colts 14, Westcliff Colts 17.
With Coopers facing the wind it was expected that Westcliff would dominate the second half but Coopers allowed Westcliff only one further score on fifty minutes when the fullback ran fifty metres before slipping the ball to the centre to score under the post and then convert the kick. Good rugby was played by both teams in an excellent sporting manner.
Final score Old Cooperian Colts 14 pts, Westcliff Colts 24 pts.
